Governor Kathy Hochul signs bill mandating new NY drivers be tested on cyclist and pedestrian safety awareness

Manhattan Injury Lawyer GH Glenn A. Herman, Esq comments: The mandatory pedestrian and bicyclist awareness component of the pre-licensing course for driver’s license applicants in New York could not have come too soon. Bike ridership has surged due to the pandemic and there are more e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds and other micromobility devices on our streets than ever before. Especially will delivery people zooming every which way, drivers need to pay strict attention to the road and traffic around them.

Several times a week I personally observe very close calls between cars, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians. Many motorists are not checking for cyclists when turning on side streets whether turning left or right. Very often, the left-turning vehicles are driving over dedicated bicycle lanes yet are failing to check their mirrors to see if anyone is coming up the block. Hopefully, the new curriculum will make, at least, new drivers more aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
